PALS Provider Recertification Course

This course is intended for PALS recertification only. Participants must have previously been certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Course Format

The 2025 PALS Provider Course requires participants to complete pre-course preparation before attending the in-person session. This preparation includes the mandatory Pre-course Self-Assessment followed by required online educational modules.

The classroom portion of the course focuses on hands-on training and scenario-based learning. Instructors guide participants through pediatric emergency scenarios using manikins while reinforcing key concepts and decision-making skills.

During the course, instructors provide coaching and real-time feedback as participants practice CPR, ventilation, and resuscitation techniques using feedback devices. Students must demonstrate required competencies according to the official PALS skills testing checklists. Participants will also complete the PALS Provider written examination to confirm their understanding of the course material.

Intended Audience

The PALS course is designed for healthcare professionals who manage or assist with pediatric cardiopulmonary emergencies. This includes personnel working in emergency medical services, emergency departments, intensive care units, and other critical care settings. Participants commonly include physicians, nurses, paramedics, and other healthcare providers who require PALS certification for their professional responsibilities.

Course Content

The 2025 PALS course focuses on the recognition and management of pediatric emergencies using a systematic and team-based approach. Topics include:

  • Pediatric patient assessment using the Pediatric Assessment Triangle (PAT)

  • The Evaluate–Identify–Intervene systematic approach to pediatric emergencies

  • Application of PALS algorithms for respiratory distress, shock, bradycardia, tachycardia, and cardiac arrest

  • Pediatric resuscitation and post–return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) care

  • Effective team communication and leadership during resuscitation events

  • Management of oxygenation, ventilation, and metabolic or fluid imbalances

  • Recognition and treatment of pediatric cardiac rhythms and life-threatening conditions

Skills Expectations

Participants attending a PALS renewal course should already be comfortable performing essential clinical skills, including:

  • Delivering high-quality BLS according to current AHA CPR and ECC Guidelines

  • Interpreting electrocardiograms (ECGs)

  • Understanding PALS medications and pharmacology

  • Performing effective bag-mask ventilation

Course Features

The 2025 PALS course, based on the latest American Heart Association Guidelines, emphasizes structured pediatric assessment, effective team dynamics, and rapid recognition of life-threatening conditions. The program focuses on improving oxygen delivery, reducing oxygen demand, managing fluid and metabolic disturbances, and providing appropriate interventions for shock, respiratory failure, and cardiac arrest in pediatric patients.

Skills Testing

Participants will complete several required evaluations during the course, including:

  • High-Quality BLS Skills Testing, emphasizing effective chest compressions and minimal interruptions

  • Megacode team scenarios, where students demonstrate coordinated pediatric resuscitation management and teamwork

Course Completion

Participants who successfully complete all course requirements will receive an American Heart Association PALS Provider eCard, which is valid for two years.
