FREE Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Course – Grant Funded
Thanks to the generous support of Tioga State Bank, Maine Emergency Squad is offering FREE American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider courses for community members and non-professional individuals.
This course is designed to teach lifesaving skills including:
High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Choking recognition and relief Team-based response and emergency preparedness

This BLS Provider course is made possible through a grant from Tioga State Bank, which covers the cost of the training and the American Heart Association certification card for participants.
BLS Provider Course
This Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Course is designed for healthcare professionals seeking initial certification or renewal of their BLS certification.
Course Overview
This course follows the latest 2025 American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) and is conducted entirely in a classroom setting with an AHA-certified instructor.
The BLS course prepares healthcare providers to quickly recognize life-threatening emergencies, perform high-quality chest compressions, deliver effective ventilations, and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) as part of a coordinated resuscitation response.
Students participate in instructor-led instruction, hands-on skill stations, and simulated clinical scenarios to build confidence and competence in lifesaving techniques.
Course Content
Participants will learn and practice essential resuscitation skills including:

High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants

The Chain of Survival and early recognition of cardiac arrest

Effective ventilation techniques using barrier devices and bag-mask devices
-
Early defibrillation and proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Team dynamics and effective communication during multi-rescuer CPR
-
Recognition and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) in adults, children, and infants
Course Features
The 2025 BLS Provider Course incorporates updated science and training methods based on the most current AHA guidelines. Key elements include:

Instructor-led, hands-on training designed to reinforce skill proficiency

Video-based learning combined with real-world resuscitation scenarios

Emphasis on high-quality CPR and coordinated team-based response

Updated content addressing special situations, including cardiac arrest in pregnancy

Guidance for responding to opioid-associated emergencies
Skills Testing
During the course, participants will practice and demonstrate required skills through structured learning stations and simulated clinical scenarios. Students must successfully complete both skills evaluations and a written examination to demonstrate competency.
Course Completion
Participants who successfully complete all course requirements will receive an American Heart Association BLS Provider eCard, which is valid for two years.
